Nicobar Pigeon
Nicobar pigeon, the most beautiful bird in the world, Calonius nicobarica is a pigeon that lives on small uninhabited islands in Indonesia and the Nicobar Islands. They prefer mangroves and lowland forests. It is the only surviving member of the genus Calonius. It is a large, heavy pigeon that is 40cm in length. Males are metallic / blue with copper reflections. The color of the head and wings of the flight is black from slate blue. They have an "mane" of long, hairy feathers around their necks. Long-necked feathers, called hackles, are black and purple iridescent. The very short tail is pure white. The neck of the female is short hackles. The male has a small black knob at the base of the bill near the forehead. Bill is strong and addicted. They have relatively short heads, rather long legs (dark red in color) and not one with wings. They have large feet with long claws.

In the Wild : 8-12 years;
In Captivity : 10-15 years
Nicobar pigeons are highly nomadic among the islands. They fly over large islands and
mainland during the day to graze in a flock of 85 islands. They are especially active in the morning and evening.They roam and breed only on islands where there are no humans.When they drink, they stick their bill in the water and do not bow their head behind it like most birds. Nicobar Grung sounds like a boar when threatening others. They also make noise.

• The Nicobar pigeon is also known as the “hackled pigeon,” “white-tailed pigeon,” or “vulturine pigeon.”
• They have a very muscular gizzard (the “second” stomach of a bird used for grinding food), and can eat
some hard nuts that humans can only open with a hammer!
• The Nicobar pigeon is a relative of the extinct Dodo bird.
